Development of the Sanaaq Centre (formerly Peter-McGill Centre)
Multidisciplinary Architecture Competition
Consortium : Pelletier de Fontenay / Architecture 49 / Atelier Zébulon Perron / CIMA+
Type: Institutional / Cultural
Location: Montreal, QC
Expected completion: 2024
Size: 57,156 sq ft / 5,310 m2
The project consists primarily of transforming the interior of a base building with a footprint of approximately 5,310 m2 into a vibrant centre with a fluid, intuitive layout that combines the functions of a library, cultural centre, and social and community spaces.
The interior architecture proposed by the team is designed somewhat like an archipelago, with a constellation of different spaces (agora, performance hall, café, culinary laboratory, exhibition hall, family space, musical laboratory and library).
The centre will be attractive from the outside with its interactive facades, accessible and welcoming upon first approach, thanks in part to the generous presence of plants and essences of wood from Canadian soil. The digital screens located inside will echo the centre’s technological mission with a visual/auditory cloud, thus adding an immersive and multisensory element to the concept. The proposed materials are simple and durable intended to create a democratic and accessible space in accordance with the intentions of the project.
